I provide tutoring on a one-to-one basis, or in small groups (which can make tutoring more accessible and affordable).
I tutor both online and face-to-face, and am happy to deliver a combination of these options to suit your needs.
As a secondary school teacher, my area of expertise is in tutoring for KS3, GCSE and A Level. However, I am more than happy to tutor different age groups, and students preparing for other mathematics qualifications.
For online tuition I use a platform specifically designed for tutoring, called Bramble. You will be sent a room link which you will simply click on at the start time of the session. This has a number of advantages over using a standard video conferencing tool such as Zoom or Teams. The sessions are fully interactive, recorded and automatically shared with you straight after the lesson. The content of each session is then fully searchable by key word after the event, allowing students to quickly find and re-watch any parts of the lesson that they want to go over again in their own time. Students just need a device that connects to the internet. Sessions are more interactive if the student has a device with the capability to write on screen, such as a tablet or touchscreen laptop, but this is not necessary.
For face-to-face tuition I usually travel to my clients and deliver the sessions in their own home.
This is available for anyone living within a 15 min drive from my home. Please contact me to find out if you live within my catchment area. I will bring resources with me, usually electronically, and can still use Bramble even when we are in the same room. This ensures that the student gets all of the advantages that online tuition offers (such as saved, searchable recordings to refer to later), with the added benefit of the face-to-face connection that many people prefer.
Where possible you will have the choice between online and face-to-face. However in some circumstances it may be that I only have space to offer you an online slot.
The "per-hour" fee for tuition includes:
Prices for 2024-25 academic year are as follows:
One-to-one
Online: £50
Face-to-face: £60
Small group
One-to-one price PLUS £10 per additional student
e.g. Online for three students = £50 + (2 x £10) = £70
This lowers the cost per student to £23.33. The additional £10 per student is to cover the additional time I will spend on planning, follow up emails, and admin. I can only accept small groups of students if they are studying at a similar level to one another.
Please note, all prices are per-hour of tuition and also include personalised planning and follow up. The first session I have with a student or group will include an additional FREE 30 mins, to allow time for "getting to know you".
Online tuition has a discounted rate, simply because it does not have the same time or cost implications as travelling to see students face-to-face.
Unlike many tutors, I charge the same fees for all key stages and qualifications. This is because I invest the same amount of time in planning, tutoring and follow up, regardless of the age, stage or ability of the student. Therefore my prices are designed to reflect that.
You will be given the option to pay after each individual session, or to be invoiced monthly. I prefer to be paid by bank transfer where possible.
Students who have tuition with me over a number of years will never be subject to any fee increases.
This means that if a student starts learning with me when they are in Y7, and continues to have regular tuition each year, they will still pay the same hourly rate even if they continue all the way until the end of their A Level maths seven years later. So the price you see today will be the price you pay for as long as we are working together.
You do not need to continue to have tuition through the school holidays, but I would expect regular tuition throughout school term time in order for this to apply.
Here are some commonly asked questions and their answers. If you need to ask me anything else at all, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
How often should I be having tuition?
For maximum impact I would recommend scheduling tuition on either a weekly or fortnightly basis, and continuing this regularly throughout the academic year.
What about school holidays?
It's really up to you. It can be really beneficial to have some continuity throughout those breaks from school. Some people like to use holidays to do even more sessions to give a head start to the next year, or to catch up. Also bear in mind that it can be equally beneficial to have a complete break from learning for some students. As long as I am not going away myself, I am more than happy to provide tuition during school holidays as well as term time. I will always let you know about any holidays I have planned as soon as possible.
I'm dubious about online tuition, is it as effective?
Given the correct circumstances, absolutely yes. Distance depending, I am always happy to offer one initial face-to-face session (at the online price) for anyone
who is interested in online only sessions, but feels unsure about whether it will suit them. In this session I can go through how the online tuition works, how to access it and what to expect. You can then make a more informed decision about which of the two to go forward with.
Can I have a free trial session?
At present I do not offer free trial sessions. Instead I include an extra 30 mins FREE, added on to your first session. So you pay for an hour and actually receive 90 mins of tuition. This applies for the first session for every student or group.
Do I have to commit to a certain amount of sessions?
Not at all. You will be under no obligation to continue with tuition at any point. Simply let me know if you no longer wish to continue for any reason.
Do I still have to pay if I cannot attend my regular session one week?
No, I try to be as flexible as possible and I understand that there will be weeks that you have other commitments. The same is true for me as I have two young children myself. It's usually possible to re-arrange your session if something comes up which means we can't meet at our usual time. If not, it's no problem to skip a week.
What if I have to cancel at short notice?
This is usually not a problem as long as it does not become a regular occurrence. However I do ask that students try to let me know as soon as possible, and ideally at least two hours before a session, if they are no longer able to attend.
What if I forget to attend an online session, or fail to cancel a session in advance (online or face-to-face)?
If a student does not turn up within the first 5 minutes of a scheduled online session, I will always attempt to make contact by telephone. If they had forgotten about the session but are able to attend then they can simply join the session slightly late, and will be billed for the full session as usual. If they do not respond, or they fail to attend a planned session for any other reason without notice, then they will lose that session and still be billed for half of their usual session price.
