about me

Who am I?

My name is Kim and I have been teaching mathematics since 2006 when I trained to be a secondary school teacher. I am currently taking a break from full-time classroom teaching while my children are young. I live in Twickenham with my husband and two sons.

My teaching career

After completing a degree in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nottingham, I moved to London and trained as a secondary maths teacher at the Institute of Education (UCL). I worked in South London for several years before taking a career break to volunteer and travel in Central and South America.

When I returned to the UK I became Head of Maths in a school in West London, going on to become a Lead Practitioner there. This role involved working with staff and students in schools across the academy chain to improve maths teaching and learning in primary, secondary and Post 16 settings.

When I met my husband I moved to the London Docklands and taught in a Post 16 college in central London part time, whilst exploring freelance opportunities on the days when I was not in the classroom.

I am passionate about giving all students the best possible experience of learning mathematics. I am constantly adapting and refining my own teaching to give the best to my students, and have always chosen to take on roles which focus on supporting other teachers to develop their skills in the maths classroom too.

I moved back to Twickenham in 2018 and have continued my freelance work and tutoring. In September 2024 I took on a new but very different teaching role as an Associate Lecturer and Link Tutor at St Mary's University, Twickenham. I am very lucky to be working with the talented trainee teachers who are studying for a PGCE in Secondary Maths. In this role I assist the course lead by planning and delivering lectures on a variety of aspects of teaching in secondary schools. I also support some of the students by tutoring them throughout their teaching placements, visiting them in school and observing their teaching.

My freelancing career

I have gained experience doing a variety of freelance and consultancy roles over the last few years.

  • Credible Specialist for Pearson (Edexcel): I worked alongside other specialists to write and deliver training for teachers, both in person and online, for the new 2017 A Level specification. I continue to be part of the CS team.
  • Text book resource author: I wrote resources to accompany the current Pearson (Edexcel) A Level maths text book series. I designed and created all of the GeoGebra interactive online content for the Pure, Stats and Mechanics text books. I also wrote and recorded the video content for use of scientific and graphical calculators, which can be found in the online content for the series of books.
  • Examiner (Edexcel): I started marking in 2016 and I have been contracted to mark candidates' work in the summer exam series regularly since then. I usually mark A Level Pure maths papers, and have in the past marked for the International A Level Core 3/4 paper. More recently I have also started marking Further maths A Level papers for the Decision option, and also International A Level Decision maths papers, in both the January and June exams. Marking gives an invaluable insight into the standard that students need to meet in order to have success in their examinations, and as such is some of the best training you can undertake to improve your teaching.
  • Casio trainer: I worked with Casio for several years as a trainer. This involved going into schools to introduce new calculators to the staff and train teachers on how to use existing calculators more effectively in their lessons. The main focus was to encourage teachers to introduce graphical calculators into their teaching to improve learning outcomes through the use of technology.
  • In school intervention: I have provided intervention classes for groups of Y11 and Y13 students, with the aim of improving results outcomes. I have also provided support for Early Career Teachers as well as less experienced leaders of mathematics departments.
